Barr Construction building new football stadium in Paisley

Main contractor Barr Construction is currently working on a new 8,000-seat stadium for St Mirren Football Club on Greenhill Road, Paisley.

The stadium, which was designed by Barr, is being built on a previously unused 12.5-acre site in Ferguslie Park, one of Paisley’s brightest and most ambitious areas. St Mirren’s existing stadium, which has stood since 1894, was sold to supermarket giant Tesco in April 2007 and will be redeveloped once the new ground is complete.

Work on the project began on 7th January and is scheduled for completion in November. When complete the stadium will include four separate stands as well as three all-weather five-a-side pitches which can be accessed by the community. There will also be 520 car park spaces and 17 berths for bicycles.
Each of the four stands is based around a central steel frame coated with concrete, ensuring a fast, simple construction process with a durable finish. The roof and walls of each stand will be augmented by facing brick dado walls and clad in profiled metal, with panels provided by Kingspan. To protect supporters from the elements, the construction team will enclose each stand using translucent single-skin cladding attached to sheeting rails.

Inside the ground supporters will reach the main terracing area via a series of concrete steppings, and the backs of the stands will be clad in Kingspan profiled metal wall panels which provide double-skin insulation. The main stand is designed to be the most stylish and prominent of all four supporters’ enclosures, and the designers have incorporated plastisol-coated insulated cladding with micro rib finish and profiled metal roof cladding to add elegance and durability. The main entrance to the stadium will incorporate a striking glazed feature as well as electrically operated roller shutters inside a concealed box.
The completion of the new ground will reinforce Barr’s reputation as a leading specialist in the field of stadium construction.

The firm runs a dedicated stadium division and has recently carried out work on some of Britain’s most eye-catching and forward-thinking new sports arenas. Barr’s portfolio includes St Mary’s (the new home of Southampton FC) and a brand-new ground for the Warrington Wolves rugby league team, and the company has also completed redevelopment work for top-class teams such as Fulham and Celtic FC.

The firm previously built two of the stands at St Mirren’s existing Love Street ground, creating capacity for 5,000 spectators in the process.
