Salford streets are turning green

On 6th June leading members of Salford City Council, Cllr John Merry and Cllr Derek Antrobus gathered together with leading Northwest regeneration figures and local residents to celebrate the completion of the first major Green Streets in Salford scheme, The Green Triangle.

Completed in March of this year The Green Triangle is the first in a series of street tree planting schemes to be delivered in Salford under Red Rose Forest's groundbreaking project Green Streets, delivered in partnership with Salford City Council, Charlestown & Lower Kersal NDC, the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), the Forestry Commission, Newlands and United Utilities.

So far three streets in the centre of Charlestown and Lower Kersal have been transformed by the scheme with the successful delivery of just under 50 high specification street trees (including Birch, non-fruiting pear and white flowering cherry) across Gerald Road, Seaford Road and Cromwell Road and the development of one traffic calming scheme - forming what has been dubbed The Green Triangle.

Street tree planting schemes play a vital role in the urban environment, adding seasonal colour, attracting wildlife and helping to create attractive street environments for residents, visitors and businesses. They are also essential for meeting the challenge of climate change through providing local adaptation solutions such as the provision of shade and cooling during warm summer months.

Local resident and Chair of the NDC Board, Ann-Marie Pickup, welcomed the scheme, "We have some great green spaces in the NDC area, and bringing greenery to the streets is a great way of brightening up the area even further and improving the environment and our community's quality of life and health."

Cllr Merry, Councillor for Broughton Ward, Leader of Salford City Council and NWDA Board Member said:

"The Green Streets project gives local residents and communities the chance to put their stamp on the neighbourhoods in which they live and to create an environment that will enhance the quality of life for all.

"The NWDA, together with the Forestry Commission, has agreed to support this work further through the Newlands programme. This will contribute an additional £50,000 per year for each Community Forest, over each of the next five years, so setting the scene for similar activity aimed at transforming our public spaces through street greening projects.

"The continued delivery of such schemes will create real benefits to communities and increase investor confidence."
