More skilled workers needed

The Union of Construction Allied Trades and Technicians (Ucatt) days the construction industry must do more to attract the skilled workers of tomorrow.

The respected body, which represents builders and tradesmen from all sectors of UK construction, claims that 80,000 new workers are required each yet to meet the country’s construction targets.
However it adds that only 7,500 apprenticeships went ahead in the construction sector over the course of last year, and an ageing workforce is exacerbating the scarcity of skilled labour.
According to Ucatt, this shortage may have a detrimental knock-on effect in the housing sector if unchecked.
